ParrotiaThe Persian ironwood, introduced over 150 years ago from northern Iran, is a magnificent autumn highlight in larger gardens, either as a large multi-stemmed shrub or as a specimen tree that can reach 9-10m (30-33ft). Its branches spread widely, taking up a lot of space and making a vivid display in autumn when its tough, shapely leaves turn brilliant crimson and gold. Older plants bear attractive flowers, resembling crimson paintbrushes, before the leaves appear. It tolerates lime, but colours best on acid soils.
