Figs are sun loving plants and are often seen around the Mediterranean countries, they are capable of producing up to three crops of their fruits per year but in the UK they usually just provide one crop unless we have a particularly early spring and late autumn in which case they will squeeze out two crops.

They are very strong growing trees and must be confined to a pot or a specially dug trench which has something in the bottom to prevent the damaging tap roots from escaping.

The best varieties of fig to grow in the UK are Brown Turkey which is a large dark skinned variety Brunswick is also a variety grown in the UK. Both of them are relatively heavy cropping but the most common type grown is undoubtedly Brown Turkey. This variety produces a bumper crop of large, pear shaped, dark purple skinned fruit which has a ruby red flesh that is very sweet and succulent. It is also one of the most vigorous growers and MUST be confined otherwise it will just grow bigger and bigger at the expense of fruit.

Kiwi 'Jenny' (Self Fertile)

Actinidia deliciosa 'Jenny'

No need for separate male and female Kiwi's with this self fertile variety.

Produces an abundance of fruit in the late Summer.

These can be grown outside as can be seen at the Wisley RHS Gardens. You can also grow partly under glass by leading trails into a conservatory with the plants in the open as you would say a vine.

Supplied as a pot grown plant approximately 3 feet tall.

The most popular dessert/culinary variety. Large juicy fruits. Very heavy cropping. Ripens late August. Frost resistant. Self-fertile. Pollination group B.

An excellent all round performer producing large, juicy, acidic fruits for dessert/culinary use in September. Self-fertile. Pollination group B.

Cherry 'Lapins' is a dark fleshed, heavy fruiting, self-fertile variety. Fruits late in the year.

Crab apples (Malus) are probably the most popular flowering trees, brightening up our gardens in the spring with a mass of lovely pink and white blossom followed by large clusters of colouring fruits suitable for making crab apple jelly. They are also used as universal pollinators for apple trees.

'Golden Hornet' has white flowers followed by bright yellow alomost conical fruits persisting until December. Self fertile.
